Tokyo Game Show 2024 erupted onto the scene from September 26 to 29 at Makuhari Messe, delivering its biggest edition yet. In a spectacle that hosted 985 exhibitors and over 3,250 booths, it became the most expansive TGS ever, with attendees numbering 274,739 across four feverishly packed days.
Sony returned to TGS after a five-year absence, making a statement with the public debut of the PlayStation 5 Pro—set to launch November 7. Crowds flocked to play cutting-edge demos like Astro Bot, Monster Hunter Wilds, Dragon Quest III HD-2D Remake, Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, Death Stranding 2: On the Beach, Metaphor: ReFantazio, Sonic X Shadow Generations, and more. The booth’s rich schedule featured live stage events anchored by key developers that further amplified the excitement.
Capcom dominated with its flagship Monster Hunter Wilds, revealed as the series’ first true open-world adventure. Players navigated shifting weather and cooperative hunts, wielding weapon customizations and multiplayer options that signaled a fresh evolution for the franchise. A staggering amount of space at Sony’s booth and Capcom’s own area was devoted to this title, underscoring its pulling power. Live demo highlights also included the world debut of the VR version of Resident Evil Village on PlayStation VR2.
Konami offered a special treat with Metal Gear Solid Delta: Snake Eater, a meticulously rendered remake of the 2004 cult classic. It preserved narrative depth while showcasing upgraded visuals and immersive sound, drawing fans into jungles of nostalgia-driven awe.
Sega’s showcase brimmed with JRPG flair and nostalgia, spotlighting Metaphor: ReFantazio, the Persona-originated new IP, as well as the playful, over-the-top Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, bringing yakuza antics onto tropical shores.
Square Enix brought eye-catching VR and RPG content into the mix—most notably Forspoken, the new atmospheric action-RPG from Luminous Productions. JRPG lovers also had plenty to get excited about with appearances from remakes and sequel titles like Dragon Quest Monsters: The Dark Prince, Final Fantasy XVI, Romancing SaGa 2, FANTASIAN Neo Dimension, and Persona 5: The Phantom X.
The indie and mobile sphere buzzed as well. Wuthering Waves captivated with its vivid open-world energy RPG vibes, while Nikke: The Goddess of Victory turned heads with a unique third-person shooter style and stylish character designs. Cosplay was alive and vibrant, with global participants turning the night into a dazzling parade of stage performances.
Tokyo Game Show 2024 wasn’t just a trade fair—it was a celebration of what games can bring: community, innovation, nostalgia, and unrestrained creativity. From world premieres to beloved icons, the show reaffirmed Japan’s legacy as a nexus of gaming culture and imagination.
