Masunaga Optical marked its 120th anniversary with a special exhibition held in Azabu, Tokyo, produced in collaboration with avex Creator Agency. Hosted at the contemporary art space WALL_alternative, the event brought together Japanese craftsmanship, visual culture, and entertainment, highlighting Masunaga’s legacy while positioning the brand firmly within a modern creative context.

Founded in Fukui in 1905, Masunaga Optical is regarded as one of Japan’s most established eyewear manufacturers. The Azabu exhibition traced the brand’s evolution across more than a century, presenting archival frames alongside current collections that reflect Masunaga’s continued commitment to precision manufacturing and restrained design. The display emphasized the brand’s integrated production philosophy, from material development to final assembly, a defining characteristic of Masunaga’s approach to eyewear.

The exhibition was produced with the involvement of avex Creator Agency, expanding the experience beyond a traditional brand showcase. Under the “MASUNAGA1905” concept, the space incorporated artistic elements and installations that explored the relationship between eyewear, creativity, and lifestyle. Rather than focusing solely on history, the exhibition presented Masunaga as a living brand actively engaging with contemporary culture.

Among the invited guests was Ryota Katayose of GENERATIONS from EXILE TRIBE, who attended the event wearing Masunaga eyewear. Katayose, also known as the husband of actress Tao Tsuchiya, has built a presence that extends beyond music into fashion and visual expression. His appearance drew attention to Masunaga’s relevance within Japan’s entertainment and style scenes, particularly among a younger, culture-conscious audience.

Katayose’s participation reflected the broader intention behind the event: to connect Masunaga’s long-standing craftsmanship with figures who shape modern Japanese culture. The collaboration highlighted eyewear not only as a functional item, but as an essential element of personal image and artistic identity.

The Azabu exhibition served as a symbolic milestone in Masunaga’s 120-year history, reinforcing the brand’s position as a heritage manufacturer that continues to evolve through selective collaborations and cultural engagement. By partnering with avex and welcoming guests from the entertainment industry, Masunaga demonstrated an approach that respects tradition while remaining open to contemporary influence.
