Tokyo, May 11, 2025 — The 37th Mooneyes Street Car Nationals was held in Odaiba, Tokyo, bringing together a large cross-section of Japan’s custom car community. Organized by Mooneyes Japan, the event showcased a wide range of vehicles, from American lowriders and hot rods to vintage Volkswagens and modified Japanese classics.

More than 1,200 cars were displayed across the Aomi parking area, drawing spectators from Tokyo and other regions. Participants included longtime enthusiasts, independent builders, and collectors, many of whom have been involved in the domestic custom car scene for decades. Among the more eye-catching entries was a 1964 Chevrolet Impala with custom paintwork and a hydraulic suspension system, which drew steady interest throughout the day. A variety of Volkswagen Beetles and Type 2 buses were also exhibited, reflecting the enduring popularity of air-cooled imports in Japan.

Japanese-made vehicles had a significant presence as well, with examples such as early Nissan Skylines, Toyota Crowns, and Mazda RX-series cars appearing in modified form. While many builds adhered to American-inspired styles, there were also several that blended domestic tuning trends with classic U.S. aesthetics, creating a diverse lineup across the venue.

In addition to the vehicles, the event featured a selection of lifestyle vendors and booths. These included pinstriping artists, vintage apparel sellers, record collectors, and tattoo studios. DJs played rockabilly and surf music during the event, contributing to the overall atmosphere. Food trucks and merchandise stalls were situated throughout the site, catering to both casual attendees and returning participants.

The Mooneyes brand, originally based in Southern California, has maintained a presence in Japan for decades. The annual Street Car Nationals in Tokyo has become a consistent fixture for fans of American automotive subcultures and retro-inspired design. While the show tends to focus heavily on aesthetics and presentation, it also functions as a networking space for builders and small business owners working within the niche.

Compared to mainstream auto shows, the Mooneyes Street Car Nationals prioritizes individuality and subcultural expression over corporate exhibition. The 2025 edition followed a familiar format, with no major changes in layout or programming, but continued to attract a steady turnout and media attention within the custom and vintage car community.
