Dan Ticktum produced a dramatic final-lap victory in Round 14 of the 2026 Tokyo E-Prix, passing Jake Dennis in the closing corners of Formula E’s first-ever Japanese night race.
CUPRA KIRO driver Dan Ticktum claimed a memorable victory in the 2026 TDK Tokyo E-Prix Round 14 on July 25, beating Andretti’s Jake Dennis in a thrilling finish around the Tokyo street circuit.
Nick Cassidy completed the podium for Citroën Racing, while the result further tightened an already intense fight for the 2025/26 ABB FIA Formula E World Championship.
Ticktum Makes His Move Late
Starting sixth, Ticktum committed early to both his mandatory PIT BOOST and ATTACK MODE strategies. The approach helped him emerge from the pit phase as the effective race leader.
Dennis, however, had a significant advantage from the additional 50kW and all-wheel-drive boost available during his PIT BOOST activation. By Lap 29, he had moved ahead of Cassidy and then Ticktum to take control of the race.
For much of the closing stages, Dennis appeared set for victory.
But Ticktum kept the pressure on.
With the Andretti car approaching its energy limit, Dennis lifted earlier than expected through the penultimate section of the circuit. Ticktum immediately saw an opportunity and attacked through the penultimate corner before the final chicane.
The move worked.
Ticktum crossed the line ahead of Dennis to secure his second Formula E victory, following his maiden win in Jakarta during the previous season.
A Historic Tokyo Night Race
Round 14 was also significant because it formed part of Formula E’s first-ever night race in Japan.
The Tokyo E-Prix took place around the temporary circuit surrounding Tokyo Big Sight in the Ariake area, with the race starting at approximately 20:05 local time. The illuminated Tokyo skyline provided a distinctive backdrop to the championship’s first nighttime event in Japan.
The Tokyo double-header was held on July 25 and 26, with Round 14 taking place on Saturday evening before Round 15 followed the next day.
Cassidy Takes an Emotional Podium
Nick Cassidy finished third for Citroën Racing, completing the podium behind Ticktum and Dennis.
His podium came during a difficult weekend for the team following the death of Citroën Racing Team Principal Cyril Blais. The result therefore carried particular emotional significance for Cassidy and the team.
Championship Fight Tightens
The Round 14 result also had major implications for the championship.
Points leader Pascal Wehrlein failed to finish after becoming involved in a clash with Antonio Félix da Costa. Dennis’ second-place finish therefore brought him back into the title fight.
Jaguar driver Mitch Evans also benefited from Wehrlein’s retirement. His fourth-place finish moved him to the top of the Drivers’ Championship standings, with 144 points compared with Wehrlein’s 141 at that stage.
Jaguar also strengthened its advantage in the Teams’ Championship, while Porsche maintained the upper hand in the Manufacturers’ standings.
Tokyo Delivers Another Dramatic Formula E Finish
Ticktum’s victory continued an extraordinary run of different winners in Formula E.
His Round 14 win represented the ninth different winner in the last nine rounds, while the margin of victory was the closest of the season at that point.
The result once again highlighted one of the defining characteristics of Formula E: energy management, pit strategy and late-race positioning can completely change the outcome in the final seconds.
For Ticktum, it was a perfectly timed attack.
For Dennis, a race that appeared to be under control disappeared at the final opportunity.
And for the championship, the Tokyo night race left the title battle wide open.
