Tokyo Comic Con 2025 unfolded over three days from December 5 through December 7 at Makuhari Messe, drawing some of the largest crowds in the event’s history and bringing together an expansive lineup of international talent, comic creators, and industry figures. With an array of global film and television actors alongside legendary comic book artists and creators, the convention underscored both the diverse interests of attendees and the growing convergence of Hollywood, comics, and fan culture in Japan.

From the outset, celebrity presence was central to the event’s appeal. Johnny Depp, marking his first official convention appearance in Japan in years, was a focal point for media and fans alike, participating in autograph and photo sessions across multiple days — a notable moment in the event’s trajectory. Actors from major film and franchise properties populated the guest roster, including Elijah Wood and Sean Astin of The Lord of the Rings fame, and Norman Reedus and Sean Patrick Flanery, known for work in both television and cult cinema. Representing contemporary blockbuster franchises were Antony Starr and Karl Urban, whose roles in The Boys elicited strong interest, as well as Nicholas Hoult and Daniel Logan, connecting audiences to both comic book adaptations and Star Wars legacy.

Celebrating the 40th anniversary of Back to the Future, the convention featured multiple cast members from that franchise, including Christopher Lloyd, Lea Thompson, Tom Wilson, and Claudia Wells, the presence of which highlighted the enduring popularity of legacy franchises in pop culture festivals. The guest list also included actors such as Sebastian Stan of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, Jon Bernthal, whose portrayal of iconic comic characters has resonated with fans, Christina Ricci, and Evanna Lynch, adding breadth to the range of participating film and television talent.

In addition to on-screen personalities, Tokyo Comic Con 2025 brought in figures from the world of comic art and publishing, notably Jim Lee, the highly respected artist and executive known for his work with DC Comics, and Frank Miller, a celebrated writer and artist whose contributions to titles such as Daredevil and Batman: The Dark Knight Returns have left a lasting impact on the medium. Their presence in the Artist Alley and related programming signaled the convention’s commitment to bridging Hollywood spectacle with comic-centric cultural roots. Also present were voices from the broader industry and community, including personalities such as C.B. Cebulski of Marvel Comics and prominent Japanese entertainers and ambassadors integrated into the event’s cultural programming.

Across the weekend, these guests participated in a range of activities that went beyond standard meet-and-greets, with moderated discussions, fan Q&A sessions, and autograph/photo operations structured to allow meaningful engagement without overwhelming crowd flow. While celebrity programming drove considerable attention and ticket sales, the exhibition floor remained rich with vendor displays, independent creator spaces, and genre-spanning cosplay, reflecting the multifaceted interests of attendees. Cosplayers, in particular, leveraged both indoor stages and outdoor photo zones to showcase elaborate costumes influenced by everything from Japanese anime to Western comics and film properties.

By the closing day, Tokyo Comic Con 2025 had demonstrated its role not simply as a celebrity showcase but as a comprehensive cultural platform where international entertainment and creative subcultures intersect. With a guest list that included figures from blockbuster cinema, nostalgia-anchored franchises, and foundational comic book authors and artists, the event underscored the continued vitality of pop culture gatherings in Japan and their capacity to bring a global array of creators and fans into shared space.
