On April 26, 2025, the TOKYO Night & Light series unveiled an extraordinary new installation: “TOKYO GUNDAM IN THE FUTURE”, projected onto the entire east-facing wall of the iconic Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building No.1. Spanning an astonishing 13,904.956 m², the display holds the Guinness World Record™ for the largest permanent architectural projection mapping exhibition.
Approximately 4,000 spectators, including local families and international visitors, gathered in Tokyo’s Tomin Hiroba plaza for the opening night. Viewers responded with remarks like: “It felt as though Gundam was moving inside the building,” and “I’ve seen projection mapping before, but never with this scale—Japan’s technology is on a whole other level.”
This visual masterpiece reimagines the Gundam universe with a new color scheme and a narrative that transports viewers into a future where displaced Mobile Suits collaborate across former divides to support space development. Thematically, it portrays a peaceful, shared future united by innovation. The spectacle is accompanied by dynamic visuals and tailor-made animations crafted by Sunrise Studios and Bandai Namco Filmworks Inc.
Screening Times
From April 26 to May 6, the show will run three times per evening—at 7:00 PM, 8:00 PM, and 9:00 PM. From May 10 onward, it shifted to 7:30 PM / 8:30 PM / 9:30 PM. Screenings occur only on weekends and public holidays during the event period. Other projection works are scheduled at alternate times as part of the year-round program.
This installation marked the spring launch of Gundam-themed content within the TOKYO Night & Light series—a year-round projection mapping program designed to enliven Tokyo’s nightscape through digital art on landmark architecture. As of late April 2025, the series exceeded 600,000 total attendees, cementing its status as a major tourist draw.
With lush sound design, epic scale, and a narrative that celebrates collaboration beyond conflict, “TOKYO GUNDAM IN THE FUTURE” stands as a milestone in urban entertainment, offering a one-of-a-kind experience only possible on the facade of the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. It’s a testament to Japan’s digital creativity and storytelling prowess, inviting audiences to witness a bold vision of the future through the lens of a beloved franchise.
