TOKYO, May 6, 2025 — Actor Tom Cruise made his 25th visit to Japan on Monday, attending the Japan premiere of his latest film, Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning, held at the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building in Shinjuku. This marks his first appearance in Japan in three years, following the release of Top Gun: Maverick in 2022.
The premiere served as the first international stop on the film’s global promotional tour. Cruise was joined by co-stars Hayley Atwell, Simon Pegg, Pom Klementieff, Greg Tarzan Davis, and director Christopher McQuarrie. The red carpet event drew around 1,000 fans despite steady rain, many of whom lined up to catch a glimpse of the cast.
Cruise greeted the crowd and shared a brief message, stating: “I love Japan and its beautiful culture. Thank you for the warm welcome.” He added that the film was made with fans in mind and expressed his hope that it would resonate with audiences.
Tokyo Governor Yuriko Koike attended the event and shook hands with Cruise on stage. Also present were longtime Cruise collaborator and interpreter Natsuko Toda, and Japanese voice actor Toshiyuki Morikawa, who provides the Japanese dub for Cruise’s character.
A Franchise Milestone
Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning is positioned as the culmination of the nearly 30-year-old Mission: Impossible series, which began in 1996. The film follows IMF agent Ethan Hunt, played by Cruise, as he faces another high-stakes mission. The word “final” in the title has led to speculation among fans about whether this installment may conclude the long-running franchise or mark the end of Hunt’s storyline.
This appearance also served as a return opportunity for Cruise after his planned 2023 visit to Japan for Dead Reckoning Part One was canceled due to the SAG-AFTRA strike in the U.S. Monday’s event was seen as a “mission accomplished” moment by many in attendance.
Premiere Highlights
Throughout the three-hour event, Cruise interacted directly with fans—signing autographs, posing for photos, and waving from the red carpet. The evening concluded with a projection mapping show displayed on the government building’s facade, followed by fireworks.
Cruise repeatedly thanked the crowd before leaving the stage, closing out the Tokyo leg of the promotional tour on a celebratory note.
Film Release
Mission: Impossible – Final Reckoning is scheduled for simultaneous release in Japan and the United States on May 23, 2025.
