In the video, which appears on ABC’s ‘What Would You Do?’ hosted by John Quinones, several men and women react to racist hairdresser’s attempts to intimidate and humiliate a young girl because of the color of her skin.
In this TV show three actors play out a racist scene in Denny Moe’s, a Harlem barbershop which caters to a predominantly Black clientele.
A black hairstylist ‘Rachel’ is an actress who is flirting with a Black male patron(actor). When his White girlfriend(actress) walks in, she immediately begins loudly criticizing him while making snide comments and bashing the male patron’s girlfriend because she is White. The show is known for creating uncomfortable situations with everyday people and gauged real customers’ reactions as the stylist repeatedly criticizes the girl and chastises the boyfriend for dating outside of his race.
Hidden cameras capture the reactions—ranging from those who ignored ‘Rachel’s’ shenanigans to those who called her out for being ‘ignorant’ and ‘racist.’ While some customers sat quietly, allowing the racism to continue, while others took a stand against the hatred. What would you do?
