Unveiled at Tokyo’s GARDEN Shinkiba FACTORY, Chika Kisada’s Fall/Winter 2025 collection made a striking statement at Rakuten Fashion Week Tokyo. This season, designer Chika Ikasada transcended the brand’s ballet-core roots by infusing the collection with edgier, sportier, and more expressive energy—anchored in the theme of “Eclipse”, a metaphor for the interplay of shadow and light, strength and softness.

Long known for romantic silhouettes and delicate tulle, Kisada introduced an unexpected counterpoint: utilitarian materials, faux fur, and bold colors clashed elegantly with signature textiles to create garments that spoke of duality. Inspired by the notion that “we can be anything,” the collection explored feminine complexity—neither fragile nor rigid, but ever-shifting and self-determined.

From the outset, the mood was set with a stage plunged in near-total darkness, pierced only by red light and live orchestral strings that built into pulsing, percussive intensity. As the models emerged, their assertive walk mirrored the collection’s empowered spirit. Barbie dolls, embedded as both visual motifs and props, underlined the idea of limitless transformation. Some dolls were affixed to hairstyles, others cradled in boxed packaging—a nod to the layers of identity we curate and perform.

Silhouettes varied from tightly constructed to whimsically voluminous. Tulle balloon skirts recalled the discipline of ballet, yet were juxtaposed with oversized mohair knits shaped like soft sculptures, boxy outerwear layered with skeletal bras, and patchwork bustier dresses “packaged” under taut layers of nude tulle. In several pieces, linings and seams were exposed, inverting inside and outside, concealment and revelation.

Color played a pivotal role. While Kisada typically leans toward a muted palette, this season featured vivid bursts of pink, orange, and acidic green. Paired with black as a grounding hue, the colors added energy and provocation. Beaded embroidery, sequined T-shirts, and luminous organza skirts caught light with toy-like brilliance. Embellished handbags swung with vibrant charms, adding motion and playfulness to structured looks.

Craftsmanship remained central throughout. Lace bodysuits, sheers stitched with gleaming beads, and reworked trench coats cut short or layered with flowing tulle demonstrated the brand’s technical finesse. In one standout look, MA-1 bomber jackets and mountaineering pieces were reimagined with couture elements, underscoring the brand’s ability to bridge practicality and fantasy.

Chika Kisada’s 2025 vision speaks to a woman who is at once grounded and ethereal, fierce and vulnerable—an evolution of femininity that refuses to fit a mold. The presence of Barbie as a symbol was more than nostalgic; it was a tool of resistance, empowerment, and imagination. This was not simply a collection of clothes, but a meditation on transformation, wrapped in glimmer, grit, and grace.

With this bold expansion into expressive volumes, sport-infused detailing, and social symbolism, Kisada once again asserts her place in the global conversation on contemporary womanhood through fashion—layered, complex, and defiantly beautiful.
