Azabudai Hills, a groundbreaking urban regeneration project by Mori Building spanning over 30 years has been completed and we got an exclusive sneak peak a few days before its official opening to the public on Friday, November 24th.Ā

This compact city, integrating various urban functions, covers a vast 8.1-hectare area with an impressive 24,000 square meters of greenery. With a total floor space of approximately 861,700 square meters, it includes offices, residences, commercial facilities, cultural venues, educational institutions, and medical facilities. Azabudai Hills brings the globally recognized values of “Green & Wellness” to the heart of Tokyo.

Located between Kamiyacho Station on the Hibiya Line and Roppongi-itchome Station on the Namboku Line, Azabudai Hills seamlessly connects to Kamiyacho Station underground. As you stroll through the stores, you may find yourself in Garden Plaza B and suddenly in C without realizing it, as the gradual slope makes orientation a unique experience. The view from Kamiyacho Station above ground is breathtaking, as if a marvel beyond Japan has been created.

The development features significant facilities such as Keio University Preventive Medicine Center, Tokyo’s largest international school “The British School in Tokyo,” and the world’s first Aman sister brand hotel “Janu Tokyo.” Additionally, it houses the “Tokyo Venture Capital Hub” with around 70 venture capital firms, approximately 150 stores including luxury brands and “Azabudai Hills Market,” and the popular “Mori Building Digital Art Museum: Epson TeamLab Borderless” from Odaiba. This compact city combines diverse functionalities.

Esteemed chefs and store owners were present for the preview, offering a rare chance for direct interaction.

The collaborative project between the art collective teamLab and Mori Building, the Mori Building Digital Art Museum: Epson TeamLab Borderless, will move from Odaiba to Azabudai Hills in early February 2024. TeamLab Borderless is a “museum without maps,” showcasing teamLab’s boundary-free art.

For the grand opening, teamLab is preparing a range of new works, including never-before-seen pieces in Japan. New works include “Bubble Universe: Materialized Light, Soap Bubble Light, Purron Purron Light, Environmentally Created Light,” “Flowers and People – Megalith Crystal Formation (work in progress),” and “Black Waves – Megalith Crystal Formation (work in progress).”

“Bubble Universe” is an interactive piece themed around “Cognitive Existence,” filling the space with countless spheres, each containing different lights. It explores cognition, existence, and how humans perceive the world, highlighting the continuous relationship between phenomena and their environment.

The entrance features a unique design where text aligns only when viewed from a specific point, although the letters are actually distorted along the walls.
