On December 4th, Los Angeles Dodgers manager Dave Roberts, whose team boasts the iconic Shohei Ohtani, attended the “Kinoshita Group New Commercial Production Announcement” event in Tokyo. This marked Roberts’ first visit to Japan in two decades, blending professional and personal milestones.

Reflecting on a Long-Awaited Return

Roberts, born in Okinawa, began his remarks by sharing heartfelt gratitude:

ā€œIt’s been 20 years since I last returned to Tokyo. I’m delighted and honored to be here.ā€

He extended thanks to Japanese fans for their unwavering support of players like Ohtani and Yoshinobu Yamamoto:

ā€œThanks to your support, we were able to become world champions. Many Japanese fans also visit Dodger Stadium, and I deeply appreciate that.ā€

First Solo Commercial Appearance

For the first time, Roberts is the central figure in a commercial. Reflecting on this new endeavor, he admitted to initial nerves but praised Kinoshita Group’s values:

ā€œTheir work in education, construction, film, caregiving, and sports aligns with my interests. This made the experience very enjoyable.ā€

The ad, set to air in January, features childhood photos of Roberts:

ā€œThe outfits and hairstyles were picked by my mom—it’s a little embarrassing, but I hope people enjoy it,ā€ he said with a laugh.

Shohei Ohtani’s Playful Message

Roberts couldn’t escape the omnipresence of Ohtani in Japan:

ā€œSince arriving, I’ve seen Shohei’s photos everywhere. He’s absolutely everywhere, and it’s amazing.ā€

Recalling a recent conversation with Ohtani, Roberts shared:

ā€œHe told me his rehab is going well and said, ā€˜When you get to Tokyo, you’ll see my photos all over the place, so look forward to it,ā€™ā€ Roberts revealed with a chuckle.

A Homecoming to Okinawa

Later that evening, Roberts traveled to Okinawa with his son to reconnect with family for the first time in years. Born in Naha to a Japanese mother and a U.S. serviceman father, Roberts moved to the U.S. as a baby but maintained strong ties to his roots. He reflected on these connections:

ā€œI’m incredibly excited to see my family—cousins, aunts, uncles, and friends—who’ve supported me since I was born.ā€

The city of Naha presented Roberts with a Special Achievement Award, and Okinawa Prefecture is considering a Prefectural Honor Award. He expressed his gratitude:

ā€œI feel extremely honored and very much look forward to this recognition.ā€

Dodgers and Japan: A Deepening Bond

The Dodgers’ ties to Japan continue to grow. Following Ohtani’s move to the team, numerous Japanese companies, including Kinoshita Group, partnered with the Dodgers. Roberts reflected on this relationship:

ā€œThe love for baseball and the Dodgers among Japanese fans is remarkable. Hosting the 2025 season opener at Tokyo Dome will be an unforgettable event.ā€

Managing Ohtani’s Two-Way Role

As the Dodgers prepare to face the Chicago Cubs in Tokyo next March, Roberts addressed Ohtani’s potential return as a two-way player:

ā€œHonestly, it’s a bit difficult for him to pitch in March. Managing his innings for the 2025 season is crucial, especially with an eye on October. He’ll likely be in the lineup as a hitter, but pitching will depend on careful planning.ā€

Looking Ahead

With Roberts’ return to Japan, the Dodgers’ upcoming Tokyo series, and Ohtani’s historic achievements, the connection between the Dodgers and Japan’s passionate baseball community grows stronger. As Roberts put it:

ā€œThe deep love for baseball here and the fans’ dedication to players like Shohei and Yoshinobu inspire us. I’m thrilled to be part of this cultural and sporting exchange.ā€
